Madame Munchie Medicated Macarons Review

Here at the Review, we have an endless appetite for well conceived, expertly prepared medibles, and ever since we became aware of Madame Munchie, we’ve been dying to get our hands on their medicated macarons.  The clear first place edibles winner at the 2014 San Francisco High Times Cannabis Cup; for a bay area company, that must have felt great.  Hatched by students of Oaksterdam University, Madame Munchie are positioning themselves to be leaders in this industry.

Available individually and together in a 5 pack, Madame Munchie medicated macarons offer enough flavors to ensure you won’t get bored with your medication, and with such variety, it is likely that you will have at least one favorite in the group.

The first flavor we sampled was the hazelnut mocha, a blend of espresso and hazelnut chocolate.  The ganache filling is a fudgy chocolate that is sweet, not bitter, in the aftertaste.  I have always loved espresso drinks.  The enticing earthiness of a deep brown latte calls to me every hour of every day.  This rich hazelnut macaron from Madame Munchie recalls nights snowed into our local haunt downtown from our Eastern mountain college with lattes and biscotti and good company.

The citrus a l’amande flavor brings together the classic macaron pairing of orange zest and almond.  The taste is a sweet orange.  More zest than the fruit itself, it was incredibly bright and flavorful, like brunch on a warm spring Sunday, drinking mimosas in the sun.  I could see the citrus a l’amande pairing well with Earl Grey’s bergamot on a lazy morning off.

Tropical Jungle’s tie dye coloring makes it the most visually exciting macaron in the box; however, it is the banana and chocolate that made it my personal favorite.  The banana puree jumps right out at you and blends well with the cookie.  The chocolate is light and unassuming, a secondary flavor profile.  This was the most moist of the the macarons, with a soft, melt-in-the-mouth texture.

The most unique to me was the Green Gold, made with pistachio and gold flakes.  I am not a huge fan of pistachio, but it is a staple flavor for macarons, and for good reason.  I long ago swore off eating anything green, but this macaron is too appealing.  Bursting with nutty goodness, it was also subtly sweet.  Plus eating the gold flake made me feel like an upper middle class person.

The Grilled PBJ seems to be the consensus leader as patient favorite.  Every person I speak to raves about this Madame Munchie creation.  With grill marks burned into one side, there is some toasted flavoring, working nicely with the roasted nut from the peanut butter.  After this you notice a fruity sweetness. Most things peanut butter leave me dry and thirsty, but that’s not the case here.  Paired with a glass of milk, it will make you feel like a kid again, eating lunch at the kitchen table.

All the macarons were incredibly fresh considering they spent a week out of the fridge sitting in a drawer at the office.  This is helpful for those who will be eating them one at a time for low dose medicating.  While some patients with chronic illnesses will find the 20 mg of THC in each macaron to fall short, Madame Munchie purposefully kept the potency low so that the average patient can enjoy them in their entirety.  And with a head chef trained at the San Francisco Cooking School in charge of the baking, who would want just a nibble.  Madame Munchie also strives for organic, locally sourced ingredients for their macarons, and all the flavors are naturally gluten-free, meaning you’ll feel good about eating them for reasons other than the THC.  I had pined for these edibles for months, and they didn’t disappoint.  From the high-end, mature packaging to the reasonable approach to potency, Madame Munchie is a breath of fresh air in an often unreasonable edibles market.
